The MPO to perform Rossini’s Stabat Mater at APS Bank annual concert

Following the success of last year’s Easter Concert, APS Bank is proudly presenting Gioachino Rossini’s timeless masterpiece ‘Stabat Mater’ on Tuesday 26 March 2024, at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta.

In what promises to become the major cultural event in Malta’s Holy Week calendar, the highly anticipated concert is a collaborative effort with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Alan Chircop and featuring soloists Andriana Yordanova, Mara Gaudenzi, Alan Sciberras and Francesco Leone, and The New Choral Singers choir.

First performed in Paris in 1842, ‘Stabat Mater’ is one of Rossini’s late works and blends drama, virtuosity, and powerful choral moments. Whether one prefers the dramatic or the devotional aspects, it remains a remarkable composition in the world of classical music. But the concert is also an occasion for the Bank to transmit its own message of values.

Rachael Blackburn, Head of Culture, stated: “The message of Stabat Mater is a very contemporary one that goes beyond the boundaries of faith. Rossini’s hymn inspires reflection particularly about those who suffer and grieve in silence, and offers guidance on how to be compassionate. It resonates deeply with the values of the Bank.”
