‘Confronting Pension Inequity – Unmasking the silent struggle’ will be tackled at the next Malta Sustainability Forum

On Thursday 22 June 2023, the Malta Sustainability Forum (MSF), organised by APS Bank, will hold its second event for the year, in the form of an in-person conference at The Hilton Malta. Titled ‘Confronting Pension Inequity – Unmasking the silent struggle’, a line-up of over 20 speakers will help to raise awareness on the inequity within the pension system and how certain groups are more likely to face financial difficulties, and a reduced standard of living and wellbeing upon retirement. Perspectives from local and EU experts will be shared on the topic, featuring research on the impact of inflation. The first panel will address the inadequacy of state pensions and how it impacts certain vulnerable groups more than others. The results from the Pensions Engagement Survey 2023 commissioned by APS Bank will also be examined, followed by another panel discussion looking for solutions to this disparity. The session will conclude with a focus on what individuals can do to ensure better financial stability upon retirement.

Liana DeBattista, Chief Strategy Officer at APS Bank, commented, “The connection between pensions and sustainability may not be very apparent. However, this disconnect may be quickly resolved by referring to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, which all relates to pension adequacy and financial sustainability.”

MSF was launched in 2019, with the objective of raising awareness on the topic of sustainability, with the aim of empowering citizens to make conscious decisions towards a more sustainable life. Sustainability lies at the heart of APS Bank’s values, underpins its business strategy and is a core pillar of its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme.
