‘Gender Pay Gap’ discussed during the latest APS talks

Dr Anna Borg presenting during the fifth APS talk

The APS talks series, which creates awareness and shares information about topics that are of community interest, recently featured the fifth talk titled “Gender Pay Gap”. The lecture was presented by Dr Anna Borg, Director of the Centre for Labour Studies at the University of Malta and an expert in the European Social Policy Network.

The talk introduced facts and figures about the Gender Pay Gap (GPG) which stood at 16% across the EU and at 12.2% in Malta (Eurostat data - 2017). Dr Borg elaborated on the causes of the GPG and provided insights on how working in specific sectors, educational level, age and parental status effects the GPG. Following the event Dr Borg commented that “The Gender Pay Gap is not a myth but a stark reality. It is the result of direct and indirect discrimination which has long historical roots and which permeates society in multifaceted ways.  It also reflects the unequal sharing of caring responsibilities between parents and suggests that gendered organisations have not adapted their work practices to the needs of workers in the 21st century.”
