On 16th November 2021, Prof. Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci launched his publication Josef Kalleya & Dante: A child’s tormented soul in paradise, at the Casino Maltese in Valletta. This is the first of a series of publications by Schembri Bonaci on the Maltese artist Josef Kalleya’s engagement with Dante’s masterpiece Divina Commedia. Kalleya’s dialogue with Dante gave rise to over a thousand drawings executed throughout the artist’s life and the first instalment focuses on Kalleya’s tormented visual dialogue with Dante’s Inferno, as he voyages though the realms of the afterlife.

The publication is coinciding with the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri and is one of a series of events organised by the Comitato di Malta Societa’ Dante Alighieri. The launch event included various commemorative speeches and presentations, including by Italian Ambassador H.E. Fabrizio Romano, Dr Paul Borg Olivier, President of the Comitato di Malta, Prof. Keith Sciberras, Director of Research and by Prof. Schembri Bonaci himself.

APS Bank CEO Marcel Cassar spoke at the launch, commenting: “This was the perfect project for us to sponsor. It is a publication about art and literature of the highest grade, researched with great scholarship. We wish Prof Giuseppe and his team well for the remaining volumes of Purgatorio and Paradiso.”
