APS Bank hosted the 41st session in its APS Talk series, titled Kidney disease: Care, dialysis and transplants, presented by Dr Malcolm Mintoff, Resident Specialist in Nephrology, the branch of medicine dealing with kidney health, and General Internal Medicine at Mater Dei Hospital.
The session explored kidney disease in Malta, looking at its causes and impact on people of all ages. Dr Mintoff explained how conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure and infections can damage the kidneys, and how kidney disease can progress to the point where the kidneys can no longer adequately perform their function.
Dr Mintoff discussed the time, dietary and lifestyle demands these treatments can place on patients and their families. Kidney transplantation was also explored, including how suitable donors are identified, living and deceased donation, waiting times and care following a transplant.
Commenting on the session, APS Bank CSR Manager Jeremy Vassallo said, “Kidney disease can have a profound impact not only on patients, but also on the people around them. Conversations like this help us understand what patients go through, the care available to them and the difference that greater awareness and organ donation can make.”
This month, LifeCycle Foundation Malta will undertake its annual challenge to raise funds for renal services in Malta, with the support of APS Bank. The initiative helps provide practical support for patients receiving renal care while raising wider awareness of kidney disease and its impact.
