The 41st APS Talk explores Kidney disease: Care, dialysis and transplants, presented by Dr Malcolm Mintoff, Resident Specialist in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine, Mater Dei Hospital. This talk explores kidney disease in Malta covering its causes, prevalence and impact on people of all ages. It explains how diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, trauma and other conditions can damage the kidneys, and outlines the progression from mild disease to end-stage kidney failure.
The discussion examines haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, including the significant time, dietary and lifestyle demands placed on patients and their families. It also highlights kidney transplantation as the preferred long-term treatment, while explaining donor matching, living and deceased donation, waiting times and post-transplant care. The talk recognises the multidisciplinary renal team and LifeCycle Foundation, whose fundraising supports dialysis equipment, psychological care, nutrition services and research, while raising public awareness of kidney disease and encouraging organ donation.

Dr Malcolm Mintoff
Dr. Malcolm Mintoff is a Resident Specialist in Nephrology and General/Internal Medicine at Mater Dei Hospital, having graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta. He subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with distinction. His specialist training was undertaken mainly in Malta, with additional training overseas.
As a nephrologist, Dr. Mintoff looks after patients with a wide range of kidney conditions, including acute and chronic kidney disease, those requiring dialysis, and patients undergoing or having undergone kidney transplantation. His background in General/Internal Medicine also allows him to assess and manage adults with a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions, often involving several organ systems and their interplay.
He has a keen interest in medical education. He provides tutorials to medical students as well as doctors undergoing specialist training, supporting their clinical development and preparation for their future careers.
Outside medicine, Dr. Mintoff is a husband and father and values spending time with his family. He enjoys playing tennis and exercising at the gym in his spare time.
Since early last year, Dr. Mintoff has also had the opportunity to get to know the team at LifeCycle Malta, a charity dedicated to raising awareness of kidney disease, supporting patients with kidney disease and contributing to research locally. Earlier this year, he organised an event in support of LifeCycle. He hopes to build on this relationship and expand his involvement with LifeCycle in the future.
