The 35th talk of the APS talks series, titled ‘Keep growing: The case for lifelong education’, features Dr Maria Brown. She explores the vital role of lifelong education in both personal and professional development. In this engaging talk, she discusses the benefits of continuous education, including enhanced career prospects, improved self-care, as well as resilience and emancipation at personal, community and societal levels. Drawing on her research, Dr Brown examines what motivates adult learners, the challenges they often face, and what can be done to address barriers to lifelong education. She also shares practical teaching methods and techniques that support adult learners in meaningful and inclusive ways. This session offers valuable insight for anyone passionate about education, or seeking personal or professional growth and sustainable development for oneself and others.

Dr Maria Brown

Dr Maria Brown lectures in adult and community-based education at the University of Malta, and researches and publishes in this area, and in areas that include sociology and social impact assessment. Currently, she serves as Malta’s Ambassador for the European Platform for Adult Learning in Europe (EPALE), and on the Boards of Malta' interministerial Sustainable Development Network, and of the Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning Foundation. Internationally, her experience also includes work for the European Commission, Eurydice, the Council of Europe, and the European Co-operation in Science & Technology (COST).
