Two Generations of Maltese Artistic Families - 2015

This is the second phase of a three-year project examining the evolving inter-generational influences between Maltese families who have been gifted with an artistic touch. The contributors to this volume explore the relationships between George Fenech and his son Gilbert Fenech as well as Joe Mallia and his daughter Henriette. Whereas in the previous edition, the views of the artists were reflected upon from secondary sources, this edition relies on first-hand accounts.

Dr Louis Laganà has once again been entrusted with the execution of this project, a re-appointment which saw him selecting a number of works tracing the various stages of the artists’ lives to be exhibited in the foyer of the APS Centre throughout the month of October. Other than undertaking this task, he has also spearheaded Volume 2 of the publication ‘Two Generations of Maltese Artistic Families’. Dr Lagana’ has scripted the artists’ biographies as well as an essay titled ‘Creative Psyche and the Representation of Reality’, which delves into how these family members’ innermost thoughts and struggles translate to bold and daring works of art on canvas.

What shines through in this volume especially is how the divergent perspectives of the second generation from the first are indicative of the uniqueness of each artist and how their drive to express themselves sets them apart from others. It is the Fenechs’ and the Mallias’ ambition to learn and progress that has made them such valuable contributors to Malta’s artistic scene, and what made this exhibition and complementing publication come to life.
