Two Generations of Maltese Artistic Families - 2014

This year’s Art Exhibition sets in motion a three-year initiative undertaken by APS Bank to memorialise occurrences where art runs in the family. This concept will be illustrated through the endeavours of twelve Maltese artists, who have, to varying degrees, been prompting waves of change in the local artistic landscape from the early 20th century onwards, particularly with the establishment of the Malta Government School of Art in 1925.

Their work, which marks the beginning of modernism in art on the Maltese Islands, is characterised by the recurring themes of consciousness of one’s art practice as well as making stylistic choices within societal restraints.

This year’s exhibits celebrate the inter-generational rapport within the Camilleri and Micallef-Grimaud families, who are represented by the creative output of Antoine Camilleri and his son Antoine Paul as well as Aldo Micallef-Grimaud and his daughter Nadine.

Complementing this occasion is a publication titled Two Generations of Maltese Artistic Families which by virtue of extensive biographies and essays edited by curator Dr Louis Laganà’, takes a snapshot of the social milieu in which each of these artists operate.
