Making the planet a better place with the Sustainable Development Goals

Making the planet a better place with the Sustainable Development Goals is the 14th talk of the APS talks series, which will be presented by Dr Alexandra Mifsud on 4 June 2020.
In 2015, all 167 member states of the United Nations agreed on a framework encapsulating the 17 key areas required in order to create a better and healthier place for all. These have been defined as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the aim of ending poverty; protecting the earth; and ensuring that all its people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The SDGs call upon each member of society to play a role in protecting our planet to sustain a healthy society. They are interlinked, and this talk will demonstrate how an action in one area impacts results in other areas. Modern day challenges, from preventing the spread of disease to combatting cybercrime, from global warming to terrorism, cannot be addressed in isolation. The talk will therefore explore some of the root causes and connections of the wicked problems societies face around the globe, in an attempt to identify solutions that respond to people's daily realities. Lastly, by means of the 17 SDGs, the talk will present day to day actions that can be taken in order to live a more sustainable lifestyle by balancing social, economic and environmental sustainability.
