APS Summer Festival 2021

We are excited to bring to you the second edition of the APS Summer Festival, under the artistic direction of Ms Annalisa Schembri. This year’s APS Summer Festival will be held between the 21st of July and the 1st of August 2021 at the University of Malta main campus in Msida and will feature a fresh, exciting and diverse artistic programme revolving around a wide spectrum of arts.

One of the main pillars of this year’s edition is Diversity – the diversity of artists and artistic forms being performed on stage but also the diversity in shifting the ways with which we used to do things: This festival requires agile transformation, sustainability and a renewed commitment to arts and culture.

This Festival wants to also bring Joy – the joy in reconnecting with artists and enjoying performances safely.

The APS Summer Festival is created in line with APS Bank’s vision of being the community bank in Malta. It is not only intended to serve as entertainment for the audiences but also as a way to support the arts and to celebrate culture through a multidisciplinary approach, which seeks to promote Sustainability.

We are delighted to be working with the University of Malta, Atlas Insurance PCC Limited and Kinnie who are supporting the Festival this year.

DJUN and Brodu Live in Concert

Djun are a Maltese language pop group that combines ear friendly tunes with poetic lyrics and a musical sense of adventure. The band was formed in 2017 and immediately became a favourite among the local alternative rock scene. In 2019, Djun released their debut album "Il-Hlas", a collection of songs focusing on the theme of “endings”. Following the release of "Il-Hlas" the band continued to write new original material, and will shortly be releasing some of this material in the form of an “EP” called “Kometi”. “Kometi” marks a significant departure for Djun in terms of theme and sound for the band; the EP is a more upbeat record focusing on the theme of the high and lows of love. During the concert Djun will play a mixture of old and new songs from "Il-Hlas" and “Kometi”, with some of the songs off “Kometi” being performed live for the first time.

Brodu will be playing songs from their first three albums and also two songs from their upcoming split LP with Djun. Expect lots of out of tune singing, groove and melodies, all performed with lots of passion.

Alexandra Alden & Band: Album Preview

Alexandra Alden is a singer-songwriter and musician who marries the ephemeral with the personal through her songs. Having been launched to local fame with her contribution as a jury member on the hit TV show, 'The XFactor', Alden has become known for her bold statements, gentle demeanor and insightful musings into the creative and artistic worlds, which fuel her own musical creations.

Her debut EP 'The Curious Child' spawned two number one hits, whilst her following album 'Wild Honey', which was an ode to nature and the parallels between love, relationships and our environment framed in the context of the Maltese landscape, gained recognition overseas through her tours around the Netherlands and Scandinavia, winning multiple awards. Now, fresh out of lockdown and with an upcoming album planned for release this November, Alden has already previewed her new songs together with her band on national Dutch daytime TV, North Sea Round Town Festival and at Studio Trad in Belgium. The first single released this June, titled 'Helium’ sets the tone for even more new music to come.

Situated between two homes herself, and having been isolated from travelling back and forth for a long time, Alexandra has embedded this within her creative process. The lyrics, the images and the creative collaborations which have developed with the album all speak of the intricately webbed life that the artist now lives, balancing between The Netherlands and Malta. For this special event, Alden will be previewing her forthcoming album, 'Leads to Love', for the exclusive audience of APS Summer Festival.

249: Il-Kobor tal-Umiltà ta' Prof. Oliver Friggieri & Swing Nuages: Vintage Gypsy Swing Jazz

249: The Humble Greatness of Prof. Oliver Friggieri by Gabriel Lia

3 numbers. 4 walls. One office.

The theatrical performance ‘249’ brings us into the office of Prof. Oliver Friggieri, his second home, as we experience everything from the perspective of the four walls. It was an office always bustling with people, mostly students coming in and out. Every person who has entered the office has stayed longer than expected and never came out empty-handed. The office has seen the Professor serve his vocational role as a teacher to prepare students for the exam of life; it has seen him be a friend who listens in every circumstance and it has also witnessed the love of a father who was always ready to comfort and be of solace. In this same office, Oliver has provided consolation to many hearts and souls.

Swing Nuages: Vintage Gypsy Swing Jazz by Diccon Cooper

The band play a repertoire of songs synonymous with Reinhardt, as well as other standard tunes adapted to the swinging style. In 2015 Swing Nuages was awarded 1st place in the Indi Unplugged Competition, and have since performed at the 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions of the Farson’s Great Beer Festival, the Marsovin Wine Festivals of 2017, 2018, and 2019, and the Bubble Festival in 2019.

FRIDAY 23 JULY

Lost Voices - Ilhna Mitlufa

L-Ilhna Mitlufa is a trio of musicians, who have recently got together inspired by traditional and popular chant songs featured in the Lost Voices collection. Excited by the idea of reinterpretation of traditional repertoire, the trio have selected a series of songs from the collection and are proposing new arrangements on ghana and other popular styles found in the collection.

Accompanied by a series of short stories and anecdotes, the performance features a selection of varied music styles featured in the 1930s recordings. From more lyrical serenades and waltzes, to upbeat foxtrots, humorous makkjetti and ghana tal-fatt, the ensemble presents a unique repertoire blending the old with new perspectives and flavours.

Through performance L-Ilhna Mitlufa musicians investigate ways of performing traditional ghana, instigating the need to look deeper into our vocal tradition, whilst proposing new musical arrangements on tradition, new poetic contexts and new ways of being together in song.

THE MUSICIANS:

Mariele Zammit - voice,

Andrew Alamango - voice and guitar,

Alex Vella Gregory -voice and keys.

Guest: Mikiel Cumbo ‘L-Izgej’
